Never tell your child off or punish them when this happens.<br \/>\n \tEncourage daytime water-based drinks.<br \/>\n \tAvoid caffeinated, fizzy and energy drinks<br \/>\n \tAvoid high salt and high protein foods late in the day\u00a0(as these increase urine production)<br \/>\n \tEncourage regular daytime toileting (about two hourly)<br \/>\n \tAvoid all food and drink in the last hour before sleep<br \/>\n \tEncourage your child to pass urine before settling them for sleep each night.<br \/>\n \tRestrict screen use up to one hour use before bed<br \/>\n \tConsider a trial of at least two consecutive nights without pyjama pants or a nappy<br \/>\n \tDon\u2019t lift or wake your child to pass urine when you go to bed\u00a0(only do this in the short term if it is particularly important that the bed stays dry, for example, when on holiday)<br \/>\n \tFind ways to provide easy and safe access to the toilet at night, for example a torch by the bed or a potty in your child\u2019s room<br \/>\n \tConsider whether your child is able to get out of bed \u2013 they may have anxieties or fears that result in difficulties getting up, for example, if they\u2019re afraid of the dark<br \/>\n \tOnly reward your child for things that are within the child\u2019s control \u2013 your child cannot control what happens when they are asleep. Provide encouragement and positive comments on dry nights, but limit actual rewards (if used) for things that are within the child\u2019s control, such as drinking the recommended amounts and toileting during the day, for toileting before sleep, helping to strip their own bed etc.<br \/>\n \tMonitor your child\u2019s progress by keeping a diary\u00a0of wet and dry nights, of waking after wetting, of waking to use the toilet<\/p>\n<p>The advice above is based on recommended guidance by\u00a0NICE\u00a0and\u00a0The Paediatric continence forum.<\/p>\n<p>Further advice for parents<br \/>\nERIC, the children\u2019s bowel and bladder charity, is the UK\u2019s leading charity supporting all children and teenagers with a bowel or bladder problem.
