The National Child Measurement Programme is a Public Health Programme that measures the height & weight of primary school aged children in Reception & Year 6.

You will receive a letter providing information on the programme including dates the school nurse team will be visiting your school.

Your child does not have to take part in the programme, however, it is important that as many children as possible are involved.  The National Child Measurement Programme collects data about Obesity levels in children which the Government use to build a National & Local picture of how children are growing. The information is then used to help plan and provide better health & leisure services for the children in your area.

If you do not wish your child to take part in the programme there will be contact details on the letter that you can inform of your choice.  The height and weight measurement are taken by trained health professionals whilst the children are at school. The measurements are collected in a sensitive way; the children remain fully clothed and the results are kept private, they are not shared with the school or other pupils.  A few weeks after the children have been measured a letter will be sent out to you via the post, marked Private and Confidential. The letter will tell you your child’s height and weight on the date when they were measured and whether this means they are underweight, healthy or overweight for their age, sex and height. You will be sent some information about lifestyle changes you can make as a family if your child is classed as overweight.  The letter will include contact details for you to contact should you have any questions or concerns.
