Let’s talk about emotional health and where to go for help.

We know that lots of children, young people and their families are struggling with their emotional and mental health. We can all feel sad, worried, stressed or anxious at times. It’s a normal part of life, and we don’t have to feel happy all the time. There’s plenty of help, advice and support out there. Here are some good places to start:

  • Mental health and wellbeing resources for parents, professionals and young people from Sussex Health and Care Partnership, including top tips on how to look after your mental wellbeing and links to helpful resources and tools.
  • Young Minds: The children and young people’s mental health charity has lots of information and a parent helpline too.
  • The Brighton & Hove Wellbeing Service is a free NHS service for anyone with a postcode beginning BN1, BN2, BN3 or BN41. You can self-refer your child (or any adult in the household) using their online form.

There are lots of things you can do with your child every day to improve their mental health, as well as your own. Why not try:

  • Doing something they enjoy, just for them, each day.
  • Encouraging your child to get outside and be active.
  • Talking to your child and asking them every day how their day has been. You might not get an answer, and that’s OK. Try talking whilst you’re driving or walking somewhere, as this can sometimes be a good time to start conversations and might feel less intense for your child.
  • Listening to music with your child, and maybe even have a dance!
  • Doing something creative with them like drawing, sticking, making things or cooking.
  • Making sure their screen time is monitored and time limited.
  • Encouraging good sleep routines. We all feel better after a good night’s sleep! Get in touch with the School Nurse team if this is something you feel you need support with.

Please get in touch if you would like personalised help and support. Your child’s School Nurse is very happy to help, and we also have a Community Nursery Nurse in our team who can give tailored advice for children up to the age of 8.
