Top tips to look after your child's teeth.

Children should be supervised brushing their teeth by an adult until they are 7 years old.

How to brush effectively:

  • Teeth should be brushed for two minutes twice a day.
  • Brush with a pea sized amount of fluoride toothpaste.
  • Once brushing is finished, spit out any excess toothpaste.
  • Don’t rinse your mouth during or after cleaning because it will wash away the fluoride brushed onto the teeth.

Looking after your child’s teeth:

The frequent eating or drinking of sugar is the main cause of tooth decay. Try to limit fizzy or fruit flavoured drinks.

NHS dental treatment is free for anyone up to the age of 18. Take your child to the dentist as soon as their first tooth starts to come through, and keep going back as often as your dentist recommends.

You can find an NHS dentist online.
