National Child Measurement Programme (NCMP)

The National Child Measurement Programme (NCMP) measures the height and weight of children in Reception class (aged 4 to 5) and Year 6 (aged 10 to 11), to assess overweight and obesity levels in children at primary school.

You will receive a letter from your school about the programme which gives you the opportunity to ask for your child not to be included.

Why is the NCMP important?

The purpose of the NCMP is to provide robust data on children’s weight across the UK in order to understand and monitor levels of obesity in children. It will identify any trends at both national and local levels, help to inform public health campaigns to tackle obesity and ensure that the right services are in place to support local communities.

Why being a healthy weight is important?

Maintaining a healthy weight is important for health. In addition to lowering the risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and high blood pressure, it can also lower the risk of many cancers.
